The emergence of direct selling dates back to the mid-19th century. When the first direct selling company Southwestern Publishing House was founded in the USA in 1855, only a few would have realized the possible impact of this business model in the years to come. The MLM industry took a leap of faith; a faith that was insistent on serving the consumers in the best way possible. This network marketing industry has evolved towards prioritizing the customers ever since. The direct selling industry in the US in 2024 had about 5.4 million direct sellers and 34.3 million customers from different parts of the country. Their active participation increased retail revenue to $34.7 billion. Each direct seller contributed about $6,400 to annual sales.
When 2024 sales reached $34,740 million and a regional share of 56.8%, the United States had become the largest billion-dollar market in the Americas. The post-pandemic period caused sales to fluctuate, declining at a CAGR of 6.6% from 2021 to 2024 and 5.2% in the last year of the period. (WFDSA 2024 Stats Report)
Looking at the top performing MLM companies in USA the cosmetics and personal care industries showed appreciable growth. Companies that worked on wellness, beauty, and home care products were the main contributors to the US direct selling market. The United States dominates the wellness product market with a 31% share. With about 38.4%, services became the leading category , home and family care/durables at 14.2%, personal care at 9.6%, clothing and accessories at 4.7%, and leisure and educational products at 2.4%.
What could have made the difference for these multi-level marketing companies? Introducing multi-level marketing strategies that please the customers’ point of view can make a difference. An empathetic approach can greatly help MLM businesses to develop their distributor base in a short span of time.
