Global direct sales market performance and regional overview
During the pandemic, global retail sales of the direct sales industry grew by 2.2% in 2020 and 2.0% in 2021. Afterward, it dropped from $170,023 million to $163,863 million by 2024. That is a total decrease of 3.6%, or about 1.2% each year.
The Asia Pacific region holds 40.3% of global sales at $66,058 million in 2024, staying flat since 2023 with a 0.3% annual dip since 2021. It also contains 8 of the world’s 21 billion-dollar markets. With a 21.6% share of global sales, Europe brought in revenue of $35,352 million in 2024. Between 2021 and 2024, the region grew at a CAGR of 0.2% without being affected by the small drop of 1.5% that year. In 2024, the 28 European markets, making less than a billion dollars each, reached $5,052 million, or 14.3% of the region's sales. After contributing a 37.3% global share, the Americas stood as the second largest region in direct sales. This constitutes a revenue of $61,189 million with a 0.8% growth rate. The region also saw a 2.8% annual decline from 2021 to 2024. Other Africa led its region in 2024 with $640.3 million in sales, which is 50.6% of the total. While sales dipped 0.4% in 2024, the market still grew at a CAGR of 0.7% from 2021 to 2024.
Matching the trend in global sales, the number of independent representatives remained unchanged at 104.3 million (up only 0.1%) through 2024. Still, there are 4.2% fewer representatives than the 109 million reported in 2019 before the pandemic hit. In 2024, the number of representatives grew 3.4% in Asia Pacific and 1.1% in Europe, but fell 5.9% in the Americas and 11.8% in Africa/Middle East. From 2021 to 2024, only Asia Pacific grew at CAGR 1.3%, while Europe, the Americas, and Africa/Middle East declined at CAGR 6.5%, 7.8%, and 13.1% per year, respectively.
