Direct selling industry in China
In 2024, the top direct selling markets stayed largely the same. The US remained number one, followed by Germany, China, Korea, and Malaysia, showing the growing strength of direct selling in Asia Pacific.
China’s contribution to the direct selling in terms of annual sales and revenue is not a new story. The sector in the region has grown to new parameters in the past decade. Despite the decline in figures in the past year, MLM in China is thriving towards success rapidly.
Among the top 15 direct selling markets, six saw a decline compared to last year, with the biggest changes in Asia Pacific and the Americas. China still grew despite tight regulations and is set to celebrate 20 years since restarting direct selling in 2025.
After years of decline, China’s direct selling market returned to growth in 2024, increasing 5.0% to $15,546 million and overtaking Korea as the largest in Asia Pacific with a 23.5% share. Despite this rebound, sales over 2021–2024 dropped at an average annual rate of 1.1%.
The Chinese city of Hongkong contributed 68 to the global wellness sector in the year 2024, which is the second highest share after Vietnam contribution of 89%. Taiwan, yet another Chinese city made 63% contribution to the same sector, which again is one of the top five contributions in the year to the sector.
The Chinese contribution to the direct selling industry remains unchanged year after year. The region’s increasing affinity towards direct selling is evident in its number of active distributors which is at 3119000 as per the 2024 WFDSA report. The region falls under the mid penetration market with 0.083% penetration.
