The Republic of Costa Rica, a country in the Central American region of North America is a popular tourist destination for foreign entrepreneurs for its favorable business climate. The country’s educated workforce and strong business infrastructure are a boon for businesses of all types to kickstart their business in the region or expand their business this way.
The pandemic period saw global retail sales rise 2.2% in 2020 and 2.0% in 2021. After this growth, sales declined in the years that followed. By 2024, it had decreased from $170,023 million to $163,863 million, representing a 3.6% decline, or a drop of CAGR 1.2% over three years. The difference from 2023 levels is quite small. Even so, 2024 sales of $163,863 million are still $675 million (0.4%) higher than the pre-pandemic level of $163,188 million in 2019.
The global count of independent sales representatives showed very little change in 2024 and stood at 104.3 million, a 0.1% increase. Still, the 2024 figure remains 4.2% below the pre-pandemic level of 109.0 million in 2019.
The country’s growth has been influenced majorly by tourism, agriculture, and the export of electrical goods. In recent years, Costa Rica has witnessed the pharmaceutical, education, renewable energy, and technological businesses in the region booming steadily and quickly.
The MLM and direct selling businesses in the region have been growing year over year marking a significant improvement in its sales and revenue. Analyzing the market condition and the region’s potential, the direct selling industry has been focusing on selling health and wellness products, personal care, and home essential products in the region. With a high number of women entrepreneurs, Costa Rica stands as a true testament to the direct selling industry’s commitment to empowering women through flexible business opportunities and earning opportunities.
