Sunrun's distributed power plant strategy
Sunrun has created the country’s largest distributed power plant by connecting home solar-plus-battery systems. More than 106,000 customers across 17 programs have joined the network by 2025. These homes together generated around 18 GWh of electricity. This is enough to power 15 million homes for an hour, with a peak output of 416 MW during 1,300 events. During heatwaves and in times of high energy use, this system helps keep the grid stable. Sunrun believes that the company can grow the network to 10 GWh by 2028.

Sunrun-HASI Financing Strategy
In December 2025, Sunrun teamed up with HA Sustainable Infrastructure Capital (HASI) to fund more than 300 MW of residential solar and storage. This will cover over 40,000 home power plants across the US in 18 months. This initiative allows Sunrun to keep significant ownership, manage debt more flexibly, and lower costs. This effort follows their 2018 work to improve grid reliability in response to increasing energy demand.

Sunrun's 2024 VPP Strategy
In 2024, Sunrun ran its Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programs in almost nine states. They used solar-plus-battery systems from over 20,000 customers. This was used to help the grid, lower emissions, and save money. The programs reached almost 80 MW, with California's CalReady being one of the best with an average of 48 MW (54 MW peak) from 16,000 participants. The participation doubled from the year before, with new ideas like Tesla incentives in Texas and Ford-BGE vehicle-to-home pilots in Maryland. This showed how residential distributed energy can grow.

Storage-first approach for reliability and growth
Sunrun is giving more importance to its storage facilities. It makes battery storage a central part of its offerings instead of just an add-on. This helps customers stay strong during outages, lets more people join grid programs, and brings in steady, long-term income through energy services.
